Jer 8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
BALM.—The balm or balsam tree grew in the neighbourhood of Jericho, the Jordan valley, and on both sides of the river. The Hebrew word is derived from one signifying to cleave, and is thought to allude to the custom of making incisions in the bark through which the resinous juice oozed out (exuded is the right word to use). It was very valuable. Jeremiah asks, in words which have become proverbial, “Is there no balm in Gilead?” (Jer. 8:22). Josephus speaks of the balsam tree as being given to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba.
