Herod had divorced his wife in order to bigamously marry the wife of his brother Philip; although she was also his own niece. It is said the Pharisees were divided on the matter of divorce. The disciples of Hillel desired to make divorce easy for any cause. Those of Shammah only in cases of unfaithfulness.
