Mat 19:1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
Judea beyond Jordan, that is Perea, Eastward of the Jordan. Pella, the place to which the apostles fled just before Jerusalem was destroyed, was in this neighbourhood. Elijah’s house was also somewhere in this locality. Jesus was on the borders of the dominions of Herod Antipas. Herod had divorced his wife in order to bigamously marry the wife of his brother Philip; although she was also his own niece. It is said the Pharisees were divided on the matter of divorce. The disciples of Hillel desired to make divorce easy for any cause. Those of Shammah only in cases of unfaithfulness.
