Nahash was the King who died. He was the one that attacked Jabesh-Gilead, causing Saul to react, which connected those residents with Saul (1 Sam 11:1).
It appears from these verses that David had a better relationship with Nahash, and therefore sent these comforters. Unfortunately it was during this campaign that David had the incident with Bethsheba.

2 Samuel 17:25 -- "And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother."Just a side note about a different use of the name "Nahash"... it appears from this verse that Jesse (David's father) is being referred to as Nahash.
