It gives us great hope that God might spare us on that final day when we see the mistakes righteous David made. He knew that he was not to number Israel, and was even warned by Joab. However we see God moving David and giving him the opportunity to sin by numbering Israel. We don't know David's reasonings,maybe it was pride in that he was governing so great a number of people, possibly that hugh number gave David security, knowing that there is strength in numbers, which leads to less dependence on The Lord.
