—The weak-minded monarch gave the prophet into the ruler’s hands; he was cast into the pit (like Joseph), sinking up to his waist in the mire. We can imagine their exultation,—Now we have him, he shall die. But no, a better-hearted man, although a slave, Ebed Melech (King’s servant), an eunuch from Cush (the Soudan), took up the prophet’s cause before the King, publicly in the gate where he would meet with the support of the people. The princes dare not withstand them. Armed with the King’s authority and a guard of 30 men, Ebed Melech, with kindly forethought, lowered patches of cloth and rags for the prophet to place under his arms and raised him up by means of ropes to daylight once more. .
