(2 Kings 7.).—Is anything too hard for the Lord? (Jer. 32:37). It seemed impossible that about six times as much flour should be sold at one-fifth the price (thirty times as cheap) on the very next day. The officer scoffed at the idea, and so was not permitted to taste the goodness of the Lord.
His remark about making windows in heaven (in order to rain down flour) reminds us of the manna. The gate was the market place as well as the place of justice. Lepers were not allowed to enter the cities of Israel. Read Leviticus 13:45, 46, and for its atonement, 14:1–32. Two birds were needed, one was sacrificed, the other let free; just as two goats were used on the day of atonement, one was sacrificed, the other sent away into the wilderness bearing the sins of the people. Both find their antitype in Christ (verse 5). Darkness comes on very quickly in the Holy Land. Perhaps the host whose noise they heard was the same that encamped on the hill where Dothan stood, between Elisha and the Syrians (5:17). One officer, however great his rank, could not withstand the onrush of a hungry mob; he was trodden to death, fulfilling Elisha’s words.
