It was not zeal for the Lord alone that moved Jehu.
Let us search our hearts and ascertain our motives. Are our motives pure? Do we seek to serve God because He is the Creator, sustainer, upholder of all things, the Father of our Lord? because He loves us? because we are sure His way is best, and He will lead us rightly through this barren wilderness into the land of promise? Or do we have unworthy motives, such as the desire to be odd, love of praise, the desire to be a great speaker, to obtain a wife, etc.
In the latter days of Jehu foes came upon him from the East. There is an obelisk in the British Museum called the Black Obelisk. It was set up by Shalmaneser II., King of Assyria, B.C. 860–825, to record the victories of the thirty-one military expeditions of his reign. Five scenes are shown on it. The second shows Jehu, the son of Omri, paying his tribute to Shalmaneser.
Verse 30.—The fourth generation. 1, Jehoahaz, his son; 2, Jehoash; 3, Jeroboam II.; 4, Zachariah.

Pictures I took during a visit to the museum in 2012. A picture of the whole obelisk is here.
