According to Boulton, chapter 34 was likely to have been written between Josiah's reign and the fall of Jerusalem. He feels that the shepherds were the princes, Kings, and nobles of the land."
Ezekiel says "the weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed... And with force and harshness you have ruled them, so they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and they became food for all the wild beast."

It also makes me think of the pharasees/sadducees, who were wrapped up in their own religion, but not truly "feeding the sheep". Not only were they not providing spiritual truth, but they also weren't providing physical comforts, but instead stole from the flock.
Both the last two readings today dealt with "love thy neighbor as thyself":
Philippians 2:4 "Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others" Ezekiel 34:8 "... but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock"
