In the beginning of Chapter 27, the formation of David's militia is described as 'came in and went out month by month.' JFB describes this as, "Twelve legions, corresponding to the number of the tribes, were enlisted in the king's service. Each legion comprised a body of 24,000 men whose term of service was a month in rotation,... " It goes on to say that this legion was adequite for normal purposes of state, but when an extraordinary emergency happened, the whole force could easily be called to arms. That force amounted to 288,000 up to 300,000 including the 12,000 officers guarding the princes. Because of the brevity of service, there was no burden on the nation to support the hugh army, also the men went about the pursuits and duties of private life the other 11 months of the year. They were fully trained and ready for action at any time.
