David, the man after God's own heart, is appealing to his son not to forsake God in any aspect of life. If he is loyal to God, God will always be with him, but if he forsakes God, God will forsake him. This does not sound like once saved always saved. We know that in Solomon's old age, he did forsake God. Only God knows if he returned to God before his death.
