According to Bro. Mansfield, the word "strange" in verse 2 is to be rendered "foreign". Therefore the verse could read "the gods of the strangers-foreigners." There were strangers in the camp, some coming from Shechem after the slaying of all the males. Others could have been with Jacob's group when he left Laban.
