Habakkuk, in the same epoch, had said, “In wrath remember mercy,” and Zephaniah refers thereto in the opening of the second chapter. “Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord come upon you, before the day of the Lord’s anger come upon you. Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness; it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.” Few regarded the invitation, but those who did undoubtedly profited by divine protection during the troubled years that followed. Jeremiah in Jerusalem, Ezekiel by the Chebar, and Daniel in Babylon, are examples of those who, by reason of their having sought the Lord, had around them “the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27—compare Psa. 125:2). The protection would be manifested in various ways, but it was certain. But the nation generally was in a hopeless state. 1907 Christadelphian, p 150–151.
