According to Barnes Notes on the Bible, the Jews were required to devote a tenth part of all their earnings to the support of the Levites. Another tenth part, they paid for the service of the sanctuary, usually in cattle or grain. If they lived a distance away they could sell the offering and give the money. Besides this, every third year a tenth part was given to the poor, this is besides the voluntary offerings which they made. Mint was a garden herb that produced a pleasant fragrance and was used in homes and synagogues to make a pleasant odor. Anise we call dill and was used for its fragrance. Cummin was an herb used as the other two. These three were inexpensive and there was a question whether they should have been used for tithing. The Law of Moses said, "tithe of the fruit of the Earth." Jesus said they were precise in doing small matters, in things they were not even expressly commanded. And they omitted the greater as judgement or justice to others, mercy, compassion, and kindness to the poor, and Faith, all things due to God. These ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
