Zec 8:19 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.
Feasts: Continued.—..... To these many fasts have been added and one or two feasts. There is (1) the feast of Purim in remembrance of Esther, (2) the feast of the Dedication of the Temple which Judas Maccabeus inaugurated B.C. 164. This was described by a Zionist orator lately as “a great light (applause) which was burning to-day.” Singularly enough this very feast was attended, we may therefore say sanctioned, by the Lord himself (John 10:22). (3) The fast of the fourth month, 17th Tammuz. On this day Nebuchadnezzar broke down the walls of Jerusalem after nearly two years’ siege. On the same day Titus captured Jerusalem and laid siege to the Temple. According to Jewish tradition (not unlikely) this was the day on which Moses cast the tables of stone from his hands when he saw the worship of the golden calf. (4) The fast of the fifth month, Ab 9th. On this day Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple and overturned the Kingdom, taking the Jews to Babylon. On this day a soldier in the army of Titus stood on the shoulders of another and threw a lighted torch into the Temple. It was destroyed, and the Jews scattered into every nation under heaven “until HE come.” (5) The fast of the tenth month. 10th, Tebet, the day on which Nebuchadnezzar began the siege of Jerusalem. (6) The fast of Gedaliah. Read Zech. 7:3, 5, 8: 8:19.
