The sacrifices of sheep and goats where not a substitution for sin, the animals weren’t to be punished as a consequence for the sin we do. Sin REQUIRES the DEATH of the SINNER, not somebody or something else. There was no substitution.
“Sacrifices and offering thou wouldest not”. In themselves, the sacrifices didn’t save the man, they didn’t take away the sin. Their purpose was to TEACH MAN what was needed, what was required, what was deserved. God “had no pleasure in them”, the sacrifice itself.
In Hebrews it says 10:5 "Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me" The sacrifices pointed forward to what was needed. What would save man and remove the sins. The body and work of Christ.
What does God desire? OBEDIENCE! He doesn't desire what is required after the fact (sacrifice), but instead obedience from the onset.
