I wonder why the second brother felt bad to be with Tamar after her husband (his brother) died? Was it not the custom to do this and God approved of it because when he let his seed spill on the floor, he struck him dead. I also wonder why Judah withheld his last son from Tamar?

This appears the first recorded instance of this happening, but later is put into the Law of Moses...
Deu 25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
It appears Onan wanted the pleasure, without "rewarding" his brother with children.
Judah withheld his youngest son because he was afraid the same fate would happen to him as it did to his other two boys..."peradventure he die also".
