Before taking a close look at Anna (Luke 2:36), let us go back to that moment when Jacob had run his appointed course, and had gathered his sons around his deathbed. The Holy Spirit wished him, before he expired, to impart to them matters of vital importance about the part each tribe had to play in the divine purpose. The moment arrived to speak of the tribe of Asher, only a brief verse, yet it is a gem: “Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties”, or perhaps better rendered: “Out of Asher his bread shall be fruitful, and he shall yield kingly delights.” How surprised would Jacob have been to see one of the fulfilments of his prophecies!
Many years had to pass before that ancient prophecy became fact, but with Anna, the moment has arrived. In the dawn of history not only a man, but a woman too was involved in the downfall of the race. How fitting then that when the time was ripe God should employ not only a man but also a woman in the heralding of the Emancipator of the race—a very old man and an equally old woman, almost as if God wished us to see here the approaching end of the Jewish order.
