(Acts 18.).—From Thessalonica still southward to Corinth. Here he worked with Aquila, the exiled Jew from Rome, speaking every Sabbath in the Synagogue. When Silas and Timothy arrived a crisis came, the Synagogue was left, but meetings were held in the house of Justus, many were baptised, including the chief ruler of the Synagogue. Paul, strengthened by a vision, remained a year and a half. The tents Paul made would be of course goat’s hair cloth (Solomon’s Song, 1., verse 8). At Athens “certain men” believed; at Corinth “much people,” yet Corinth was a wicked place. The names of many Corinthian believers are given (Romans 16. and 1 Cor. 16.). Corinth had two ports, being situated on the isthmus, one port—Lechaeum—lay 1½ miles west on the Corinthian Gulf; the other—Cenchrea—lay 8 miles east on the Saronic Gulf (see verse 18). Gallio was the brother of Seneca, who says he was of a lovable and gentle disposition. He has been represented as cold and callous, but possibly he sought to protect the Christians from violence. Paul crossed from Cenchrea to Ephesus in Asia, then took ship for Cesarea (leaving Aquila and Priscilla at Ephesus), then on to Antioch, thus completing his second journey. It was not Apollos’ fault that his name was used in opposition to Paul (1 Cor. 16:12).
