(Acts 19.).—Apollos came into Achaia with letters of recommendation. Paul needed none; they were his epistle (2 Cor. 3:1). He avoided building on another’s foundation (Rom. 15:20). The re-baptising of these Ephesians is the only instance recorded, but it is ample justification for the practice we follow. Paul dwelt at Ephesus two years and three months. At Ephesus religion and trade came into conflict. Masters, modellers, and metal-workers united against the apostle. Very likely this Alexander was the copper-smith referred to in 2 Tim. 4:14. Image-worship and relic-worship have not died out. Demetrius was cunning, but he was requested by the Town Clerk or, as we should say, the Mayor to use lawful means to attain his ends.
