(Acts 27.).—Adramyttium was near Troas, but Paul did not go there. He and his companions (Luke and Aristarchus) sailed along the coast to Sidon; then between the coast of Cyprus and Asia Minor to Myra. Here they were transferred to one of those large grain ships which conveyed wheat from Egypt to Rome. After many days, they came to Cnidus, near the Isle of Coos, sailed along the southern coast of Crete to the Fair Havens near Lasea. The fast, that is the Day of Atonement, was on September 24th, A.D. 60, so that it was now about the beginning of October, and bad for navigation. They would not listen to Paul’s advice, but tried to reach Phenice, forty miles away. They were compelled to run before a North-East wind to the Island of Clauda. The 276 people all got safely to land. Their misfortunes were caused by their indiscretion, their escape was due to God’s mercy.
