Jdg 2:1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim (Bethel), and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. "The", not "an", angel of the Lord, that is, the angel of the Covenant, who was specially appointed to lead Israel (Ex. 23:20). He had appeared to Joshua (5:10–13) at Gilgal, and now appeared and reproached Israel, warning them that because of their disobedience God would not drive out their enemies. It will be noticed there is first an introduction to this book, chapter 1. to 2:5, which connects this book with Joshua, and then from 2:6 to 3:6 a summary is given which covers the whole book. Verse 10. Why did not the new generation know the Lord? Probably because their parents had neglected to instruct them while children.
