Jabin was apparently the monarch’s title, in the same way as Pharaoh was the title of the Egyptian monarchs. Back in the book of Joshua (chapter 11.) we read of another Jabin who gathered together the kings of Northern Palestine to withstand Israel. This Jabin, whose capital was also Hazor, was routed by Joshua, Hazor was burnt to the ground, and the dreaded war chariots were also burned. But apparently Jabin’s line had not been entirely exterminated. A new Jabin had arisen, a new Hazor had risen out of the ashes of the old, and to such an extent had their fortunes been repaired that the chariots destroyed by Joshua had been replaced by 900 chariots of iron. This people, doubtless eager to revenge their ancient wrongs, took the opportunity to sweep down upon their wrested territory, and we read they—in the person of Sisera—mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
