He begins his letter to them by calling himself a 'servant (doulos: bondservant, slave) of Christ'1:1. This is not to express mere humility, but totality. A hired servant, an employee, has his fixed hours, and is free to leave the employment any time he wishes: his relationship is a mutual and equal contract. But a slave is bound for life: and all his time and labor and possessions belong to his master. He has no choice but obedience, and his service is total and unchangeable.
Paul gloried that this was his privilege: to so give himself and everything he was and had to Christ in loving slavery. The bonds that held this bond-servant were the mighty, unbreakable, joyful bonds of love. Rene 1980 berean p3
