I suppose Joseph put the cup in Benjamin's sack thinking that the other brothers would not defend him and leave him in Egypt, as they had left Joseph years before. But instead of leaving Benjamin behind, Judah spoke up, offering himself up to protect his younger brother. His conduct correlated well with his future blessing.
So the brothers returned and told Jacob about Joseph being alive. Although its not specifically stated, I assume they told him of how Joseph had actually got to Egypt. This was probably gut wrenching for the brothers, having to tell their dad of their deed. "We've got good news, and we've got bad news..."
