"Set forth" is translated from the word "proetheto". A similar form of the word is in other places in the new testament translated "shewbread" = prosthesis: "The bread of setting forth" (Heb 9:2)
Recall that in the Tabernacle, the shewbread was located on the north side of the Holy Place. It consisted of 12 cakes, stacked in 2 piles, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, and relayed the meaning that "salvation was of the Jews". It was from the nation of Israel that the savior was to come from. "The bread of God" is "he that cometh down from heaven and giveth life unto the world" (john 6:33). It was from this bread that the priests ate every 7 days and it is from Christ's broken body that we memorialize when we eat of the bread each Sunday. Those of us baptized are currently (symbolically) here in the Holy Place now, using the word as our light and sending prayer (incense) to our God.
Interestingly, this bread was "on show" in the north of the tabernacle. Christ also was taken north of the city, and put on display.
Propitiation: "helasterion" = Mercy seat
Recall the mercy seat was lid of the ark in the tabernacle and it was here that God declared to be a meeting place between him and man. The mercy seat was a covering (Kaphar) and represented the covering needed for our flesh so that we can meet with God. The ark was a container, and represented Christ. Within that ark was the 10 commandments (Christ completely fulfilled the law). Aaron's rod (a symbol of divine appointment) which budded to life (resurrection). And lastly in the ark was a pot of manna, representing the living bread from Heaven, which we must eat of to live.
The ark was a perfect symbol of Christ and his work while on earth. When he died and was resurrected, he became the mercy seat, the lid, the covering of mortal sins. Soon, when Christ returns, and the saints get their reward, they will along with Christ as one body become the cherub, and the picture will be complete.
God has "set forth" one, who is now our mercy seat, so that by faith in him, we can have forgiveness of sins and symbolically move from the Hoy place where the shewbread is, to the Most Holy place where the ark resides, and become part of that cherub, attached to the mercy seat, exhibiting God's glory on earth.
