1. Reuben: 1st born.
a. Should have received the blessing (Messiah) , birthright (double portion), and leader of the tribes,
but was passed over because of lying with his dad’s handmaid
b. One of the first to go into captivity (1 Chron 5:26)
2. Simeon: (along with Levi, attacked Shechem) smallest of the tribes. His portion was allotted within Judah’s.
Moses does not mention him in his last words
3. Levi: (along with Simeon, attacked Shechem), although in similar situation as Simeon, his family ends up standing
with Moses during the Golden calf incident, “although the curse was not removed, it was made a blessing,
for they were set apart for the service of the tabernacle and the priesthood “
4. Judah: Received the blessing (Messiah comes from) and leadership role.
a. When the camp moved, it was led by Judah
b. All the kings (except Saul) came from Judah, and as well as the messiah
c. receives the promise of one - Shiloh (peace) who shall come and wield the Sceptre and send forth the Law
5. Zebulun: . geographical position is foretold – seacoast, sea traders (see Josh 19:10-16)
6. Isaachar: Strong like a donkey, would be forced to work by others.
7. Dan: Jeroboam placed a golden calf here, 1st major practice of Idolatry, Sin, Serpent
8. Gad: East of the Jordon, would be attacked frequently
9. Asher: Have fertile land. settled along the rich northern coast of Canaan
10. Naphtali: timid as a hind, living in the mountains
a. Lived northwest of Sea of Galilee, where Christ spent much of his time (Matt 4:13)
11. Joseph: He got the “birthright” (ie got the double portion instead of Reuben)
a. Ephraim: Become a multitude of nations. Prominent tribe, often named when referring to the northern kingdom.
b. Manasseh
12. Benjamin: violent in spirit (Jud 20), but from his line came the first King (Saul)
