We are first introduced to Tarshish in Gen 10, where we are given the genealogies of Noah.
Gen 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
Gen 10:2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
Gen 10:3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
Gen 10:4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands
So Tarshish was grandson to Noah and nephew to Gomer and Magog. As their families migrated westward and north, they populated the coastlines of the northern Mediterranean sea (which is also sometimes called the Sea of Tarshish).
Next we hear of Tarshish is during the reign of Solomon.
2Ch_9:21 For the king's ships went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram: every three years once came the ships of Tarshish bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.
This shows that Tarshish was both a great merchant nation, but also a great sea going nation, which makes sense they settled the meditteranean coastline. They supplied the precious materials to build the kingdom under Solomon, which is what they will do in the future kingdom as well.
Psa_72:10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
In early christadelphian writings , you read of two places known as Tarshish, an East and West Tarshish. Regarding the one in the West, we read in Jonah.
Jon_1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish
The Tarshish in the East was felt to be India.
2Ch_20:36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber.
Eziongeber being on the red sea as it says in :
1Ki 9:26 And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.
The thought being that these ships traveled to India. This made sense during Dr. Thomas’s time, as both Britain and India were closely connected, and so these two Tarshishes at that time were basically the same governing power (Britain), but its unclear if this connection will exist in end?
Now why is knowing the location of Tarshish important? Because we know from scripture that Tarshish will be closely linked to the events of the end time.
1. He’ll be a protector of Israel with his arms overstretching her, and
2. He’ll be near the land of Israel when the gogian hosts comes down.
a. Eze_38:13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil?
Notice it says “Art thou come” rather than “art thou gone” to take a spoil, indicating that the tarshish powers will be in the region when Gog advances.
3. His Navy will be weakened significantly (by an East wind) which allows Russia to advance her troops easier.
a. Psa_48:7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
Most take this to be a natural phenomenon like a hurricane or volcano.
So who is the Tarshish of these Later times?
There are two general thoughts:
1. That the Tarshish is a specific location, and that locations has been and will be the Tarshish till the end.
2. That Tarshish is a People/Nation, which have migrated, moving locations but still retaining the characteristics of the Tarshish nation.
The people who believe in the first instance, believe that the Britain was the original Tarshish power and will always be the Tarshish power. Their defense:
a. It has historically been a major supplier of metals, particularly Tin to the mediterranean
a. Eze 27:12 Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.
b. It is strictly an “ISLE”, with the only way to send an ambassador to Israel being by sea
a. Isa_60:9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first
c. It was (and they suspect WILL BE) the greatest navy power and merchant power in the world
The People who advance the second thought (ie that Tarshish has migrated over time), use the following:
a. Tarshish is thought to be the strongest Navy power in the world. This has changed over time, during Dr. Thomas’s time was Britain, but now is US
b. Tarshish is to be protector of Israel. Initially was Britain, who has appeared to pushed away from Isreal (White Paper), but now the US appears to be the clear protector of Israel.
c. Tarshish is a great Merchant of metals. Supporters of this thought say that instead of being “producers”, the Tarshish nation was primarily a “trader” (didn’t have to produce it)
d. Tyre and Tarshish connected closely and its agreed that prophetic Tyre has migrated
a. Throughout scriptures, and particularly in Isa 23, we see a close link between Tyre and Tarshish.
i. Isa 23:1 “The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish;”
b. Brother Thomas wrote” Tyre was likewise the emporium, or commercial centre, or capital, of the fleets of Tarshish ” and in the same article (1888 Christadelphian p386) says “Tyre has been in Alexandria, in Venice, in Genoa, in Lisbon, in Holland, and lastly, in Britain
Whichever view is correct, it is clear that the Tarshish nation will be under the NEW KINGS control and will obey him and become his naval arm. They will supply the needed supplies for the new kingdom and bring the jews back to the land.
Isa_60:9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
