Realizing that most things that happened to the Hebrews during there travels (mana, striking the rock,etc) has symbolic meaning, what does this event teach us?

I didnt find anything about what the bitter water would signify. I take the literal meaning as stated above, a test that Israel failed early on. I guess we could try to apply the bitter water as unfit for consumption being the opposite from the clean water coming from the rock (signifying the Word of God), which could mean any doctrine of wickedness. That is probably stretching it further than it should be
