what is the significance of this, and do we know who Hur is or where he came from, which family or whatever

I couldn't find much on Hur, but there is a Hur from Judah, not forsure if same one though.
If the analogy is similar to the rod striking the rock (Christ), the rod held by Moses represented the mosaic laws. If we keep the same analogy, then maybe it represents, as long as we keep Gods laws in hand above all else, then we will overcome our enemy (specifically sin).
