In verses 49-50 we find Jesus using salt to teach a lesson to his disciples. We know salt is a preservitive,and a medicine, and is used to make food taste good. Salt enhances the taste of food and using this as a analagy shows that we need to enhance our enthusiasm for the Truth. I think in this particular scripture, it is used to satisfy and create pleasure for God. The apostles were the salt of the earth as long as they created pleasure and satisfaction for God. God's desire was for them to be strong in the faith, have knowledge in the scriptures, be enthusiastic and energetic in teaching his will and living their life. When we loose that characteristic of saltyness we are no longer pleasing and satisfing to God.
