When Jesus said: "No man hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, etc., but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time" (Mk. 10:29). —he was referring to the apostles, of whom Peter had just said— "We have left all, and followed thee" (v. 28).
Within 2 years or so after this saying, the effect of the Pentecostian effusion of the Spirit was such as to place at the disposal of the apostles 100 times more friends, houses, lands, etc., than they could ever have had by their private efforts if they had chosen not to leave all and follow him.
Act 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, Act 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet:
It is not a rule as regards the results of sacrifice for Christ's sake in our age, nor was it a rule then. But as a matter of fact, it was an episode in the apostolic experience, as Christ foretold. -July, 1885.
