It is hard to believe that the religious leaders, mostly Sadducees, could be so wicked, especially one being the high priest. But we recall, that is if I understand it correctly, the high priests were appointed from the Sadducees by Roman authorities. Annas was the prior high priest and he was replaced by Caiaphas, his son in law. I read that the next four priests were Annas' sons and the last one was high priest when James the brother of Christ was killed. Each high priest might have had the knowledge in the field of the high priest but regardless, they were there for their own gain and the prestige that came with the position.

I've read that the "appointment" also come by way of the highest bidder!
