"A Song of degrees", otherwise known as "Songs of Ascent", were sung by pilgrims as they went up to the Temple in Jerusalem. Matthew Henry's mentioned that some think they were sung on the fifteen steps or stairs, by which they went up from the outward court of the temple to the inner.
