ENOCH (J. C. H.)—The Enoch’s of Gen. 4. and 5. are not the same person. The Enoch of chapter 4. was (as you rightly observe) “the son of Cain, the first-born of Adam;” but the Enoch that “appears several generations afterwards” in chapter 5. was a descendant of Seth, the third son of Adam. Seth took the place of righteous Abel as head of the line in which the promised seed should be born. The one chapter records Cain’s genealogy, while the other gives us Seth’s. There is therefore no “discrepancy.” There were also two Lamech’s.
