One more word. The apostle wrote, “Ye are saved if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain” (that is, unless the word has not had any effect upon you). To avoid presumptuous sin, therefore, we must keep in memory the written word. Now we have seen how Moses commanded Israel to make fringes upon their garments, and put thereon a ribbon of blue, in order to keep in memory the ordinances of the Lord. In a like manner we must be embroidered by cunning device if we are to avoid presumptuous sin. And since there is not much room for embroidery upon human kind, many devices must be omitted if true knowledge is to be enshrined in the understanding.
