As the two men traveled the road to Emmaus, Jesus joined them and expounded all the scriptures concerning himself. They did not recognize Jesus because their sight was withholden. If he had let them know it was him at the first, they would have been full of joy, gladness, and questions about his role in their future. Probably they would not have been able to absorb the information he was teaching them on this walk. Their hearts were burning as they heard the scriptures he went over about himself. They were sad to have lost their Messiah and that void was filled with scriptures from the Word of God. They were enlightened later at the breaking of bread. What a shock these men must have had, to understand that their Messiah walked with them, understood their sadness and filled their hearts with joy and the Words of God.
