Verse 18 is also critical in that we must correct our children. There is a time that is too late, so we must work with and correct our children at an early age. We want our children to be successful and obedient. Successful is being obedient and loving to God.

I like the RSV version of this verse: 18 "Discipline your son while there is hope; do not set your heart on his destruction."
Kids grow up so fast. We only have a short time to teach them. It is much harder to get a problem under control if you wait too long, and at some point there might not be a way to correct the problem. On the other hand, our discipline has to be done with love and with the idea of building up and teaching in the long run.
