The Book of Proverbs is a compilation, something like the Psalms. Compare ch. 25:1, where there is a break in the matter and we are told: “These are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, King of Judah, copied out.” Also ch. 31., “The words of King Lemuel.” It is not certainly known who “Agur, the son of Jakeh,” was. Some think that both this name and “Lemuel” are typical names of Solomon himself, Agur meaning “Collector,” and Lemuel meaning “For God.” Ithiel (which is a proper name found in Neh. 11:7) is taken to mean “God is with me,” and Ucal to mean “I am strong.” If this be not so, we have here the words of an otherwise unknown man of God (or men of God). The “word” is very sublime, and reminds us of Job’s humiliation when God challenged him with the rehearsal of all His mighty works. The question, “What is His Son’s name?” seems to refer to the Davidic covenant: “I will be his father, and he shall be my son.” But who was “he”? None could “tell” until the Lord Jesus was manifested. 1907 Christadelphian p122
