I have read several opinions as to what "release" means. Some take it to mean "total forgiveness of any debt" that would take place every seventh year. Others take it to mean "release for that one year." Could someone that did not have a good spirit take advantage if the interpretation was "total" and you were commanded to lend? Also, is there not a qualifier as far as who you were obligated to lend to? Does not verse verse 7 qualify the obligation of lending only to the "poor?"
So if you are a Jew living in the land, when the Law of Moses was in effect, who would decide which interpretation of "release" is meant? Who would determine who was "poor" or whether there was even a qualifier to help only the poor and not the rich?
Does the whole community have to agree on only one interpretation?

I think it would mean total forgiveness.
I think only the lender would determine who was poor.

Thats a good question I hadnt thought of before, but I'm sure there were some money hungry individuals that had plenty but wanted more, and would try and use this to get more money from others. Enough about that though, would any of you happen to have a couple hundred grand to lend to needy brother?
