Son 6:4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners. Son 6:5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead. Son 6:6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them. Son 6:7 As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
Deeply touched by the devotion of his beloved, he in turn speaks of her beauty. Tirzah was the royal city of the ten tribes, till Samaria was built. Jerusalem, “beautiful for situation,” was “the joy of the whole earth.” “Terrible,” that is dazzling, like the glittering banners of an army, so is the smile of her eyes. Those mournful eyes shall not look to him in vain. “Refrain thine eyes from weeping,” “thy work shall be rewarded.” She is not a frivolous, fair haired vanity, but a “dark-eyed queen.” Solomon had many wives, so now there are many sects. There is but one true church, one “Ecclesia,” one bride. She is undefiled and pure in all things. He applies to her the very terms of endearment she had used to him, for they are one in heart and mind.
