When it was told Paul that it was the High Priest, he at once apologised for his unwitting breach of the law (Ex. 22:28), concerning which the Sanhedrim (the Council of Seventy) were terribly punctilious. But all the same the right was with him, and his indignant interjection was a prophecy by the Spirit of God, just as much as was Caiphas’ saying concerning the expediency of putting Jesus to death (John 11:49, 51). The fulfilment came some years later, before the fall of Jerusalem. Josephus tells us that in the disorders in the city that preceded the siege, the robbers burned Ananias’ house, and he himself was shortly afterwards slain by them when taking refuge in an aqueduct. Thus God smote that “whited wall,” and there were probably many such divine smitings in the course of that terrible time.

The other question is whether his sight was effected enough that he couldnt tell which was the High Priest
