(Acts 28.)—Paul had foretold that they would be cast on a certain island (27:26). This island, Melita, is believed to be Malta, on the north coast of which is Koura Point, and St. Paul’s Bay, which exactly corresponds with the description here given. The word “flux” means flow, the Greek word used by the “beloved physician” is the same as our term Dysentery. Syracuse is in Sicily. Rhegium, now called Rheggio; and Puteoli, now known as Pozzuoli, are on the Italian mainland. Appii Forum, that is the Market Place of Appius, is 43 miles, the Three Taverns 33 miles from Rome. Paul was duly handed over, and kept chained by the wrist (Hebrews 13:3) to a soldier. Here at Rome Paul proclaimed the truth to the Jews; it was rejected by them but received by many during his two years’ dwelling in his hired house, and here Luke, having shown us the spread of the truth, even to the Imperial City, lays down his pen without any flourish, and is rightly followed by the Epistles, which bring us to the close of the life of Paul the aged. Historians tell us Paul was at first liberated, but afterwards re-arrested and beheaded by order of Nero in June a.d. 68. 1899 Christadelphian p 132.
