Concerning Achan we read, “Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garments, and the wedge of gold, and his sons and his daughters, and his oxen and his asses, and his sheep and his tent, and all that he had. . . . And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones” (Josh. 7:24–26). Now while it is not expressly stated that the “sons and daughters” were personally involved in the transaction which brought the evil upon Achan and his house, it may be presumed that such was the case from the fact that the theft could not well be hid from his family seeing the stolen property was hidden in the earth in his tent, even if they had not helped to bring the stuff thither (Ps. 1:18). Neither can it be supposed that Deity would direct Joshua to disregard His own law, which was that “The children shall not be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin” (Deut. 24:16). The implication, therefore, amounts to a certainty, that the sons and daughters were partakers in the sin of Achan, and therefore died with him. .
