PRAY FOR KINGS. Paul's exhortation to "Pray for kings & all in authority" (lTm 2:2)
was dictated by a desire for peace to the friends of Christ, as the context shows.
Upon the doings of kings, etc., the public well-being depends, and in the public
well-being, the friends of Christ are involved. The prayer would be that God should
overrule the moods and decisions of kings and authorities that the saints might be
permitted to lead quiet and peaceable lives.' It was a needed prayer in times when
