We are told in verse 10 that Ephraim did not destroy the Canaanites especially in the land of Gezer. They decided to bring them under tribute and bring in money instead of what God told them to do. Those of Gezer could have accepted God's terms and become adopted Israelites; however, they then could not have by law been under tribute but would have been fellow Israelites.
Gezer was subdued by Pharaoh during the time of Solomon and Pharoah gave Gezer to his daughter who later became Solomon's wife.
