Shiloh, a fine central position in the land, pleasantly situated on a hillside, the spot that was the first capital of Israel under Joshua (ch. 18.), where the Land was divided by lot (19:51), and the tabernacle rested for “about the space of 450 years.” It was from here that the Levitical cities were appointed (21:2). From here also started the punitive expedition to chastise Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for building an altar to a strange god, as was supposed (22.). It was a pleasant relief for the expedition to discover that their action was one of faith and not of apostacy.
