Why did God close up the womb of the house of abimelech, because of Sarah?

Sarah didn't belong to Abimelech, but instead Sarah was to be with Abraham and be part of Gods Plan. Abimelech appeared to be a righteous man (vs 4) but it was wrong to take another's wife (although he was unaware of the situation).
It reminds me when the philistines had taken the ark (which wasn't theirs) and instead of it bringing them God's blessings, it brought a curse until it was returned to the place God wanted it to be at.
Because he had done it unaware, God actively prevented Abimelech from going into Sarah. RR says in Ways of Providence:
Abimelech’s case shows us that we pray not a vain prayer when we pray “deliver us from evil”. Nor is it an empty allusion when Jude ascribes glory “to him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (verse 24). The lesson of the case is both comforting and purifying. It is the lesson embodied in the words of Peter: “Let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him IN WELL DOING, as unto a faithful Creator.”
