I was hoping someone could help me out with the first reading for today. Gideon seems to be taking a "I want to trust you Yahweh, but I just have to make sure" approach to obey to go up against the Midianites. Am I reading this wrong, or was is the case? If it is the case, was it wrong? I probably should have read ahead to see if there was any repercussions mentioned. This board is awesome by the way.

Funny you asked that, as we had same question come up in our readings. Curious as to others answers.

I dont think it was wrong of him to ask. We see a few examples of this the first one is abraham asking those not to destroy sodom and gomorah each time asking if there are only this many people. Another time one of the kings was asking if God would help them overcome their enemies. To me it makes the people we are reading about more realistic, more human if you will, with the same concerns, fears that I myself might have. Evertime I see it I do notice the person asking for more proof is really really humble in asking.

Good point. The Bible doesnt hide the imperfections of man, and that does make it real, and believable. Gideon didnt run like Jonah did. He wasnt saying he wouldnt do it, but wanted to be sure that the direction he was told to go was certain. He was told to put his life and his family's life in peril, how many of us would want to make sure too!
And yet in comparison, I find myself often walking the other direction when I see a presider heading my way.... How easy we have it, and how pathetic in comparison (taking about myself)....
