RUTH AND NAOMI. The lesson is an easy one; the mere story holds the attention. The book of Ruth is an appendix to Judges, and forms in its idyllic setting pleasing contrast with the blood and violence of the times of the Judges there recorded. The book is historically important as giving the lineage of David, and showing the ancestry therefore of Christ. The name of Bethlehem at the outset draws the mind to Christ. Naomi is an ordinary good practical woman, faithful and pertinacious of purpose, trusting in God in adversity and prosperity. Ruth is affectionate, faithful, industrious, modest, patient and resolute. Much younger than her second husband. The name Ruth means “beautiful.” Naomi means “my pleasant one.”
Parched or roasted corn is the common food of the reapers to this day in Palestine. Wheat harvest is near the Feast of Pentecost, and the Book of Ruth is read by the Jews at that celebration.
