In the Hebrew the two books of Samuel were one book. They were divided by the translators of the Septuagint. The first book deals with Samuel and Saul, and was chiefly written by Samuel.
Ramathaim is the double form of Ramah; it means the double height of Ramah. Zophim means of the Zuphites. There were several Ramahs; this one became Samuel’s abode (7:17; 8:4), and is mentioned by Jeremiah (31:15). Hannah means gracious; Peninnah, some say, Coral, but this seems improbable.
Samuel was not descended from Aaron, but from Izhar, Amram’s brother. He was, therefore, a Levite. Probably Elkanah married Peninnah because Hannah was barren. Although the word temple is used, we must not forget it was the tabernacle where Samuel ministered, and this was still at Shiloh.
